Private George Leonard Carter, formerly of Gorefield

Private George Leonard Carter service number 17705 of the Welsh regiment, son of Henry and Sarah Carter of Chapel Bridge Leverington, formerly of Gorefield. George was killed during the battle of the Somme on the 12 July 1916, during the attack on Mametz Wood by the Welsh Regiment. His photograph, which is kept in Gorefield Church, was identified by his uniform and cap badge. As to why he signed up to the West regiment in Wales is a mystery, one can only assume he was living in Aberavon when the war broke out because he was working there in some capacity. He has no known grave, but is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, and Gorefield War memorial.
