Jabez East from Meldreth enlisted as a Private in the Cambridgeshire Regiment in April 1916 (service no: 6658, later 327522). He left for France in July 1916 and was posted to the Western Front. He came home in October that year suffering from septic poisoning but returned to France in March 1917. He fought in the third Battle of Ypres and was killed by a bursting shell on the morning of 31st May 1917. He was 24 years old.
