Herbert Balls, Private. From Gorefield

Herbert Balls. son of John Herbert, and Lilly Balls, was one of the Gorefield blacksmith family who survived the war. He was in the Army service Corps and served in France from 15th June 1915, later transferring to the 22nd Squadron, Machine Gun Corps( Cavalry), possibly in the transport section, because he was a skilled farrier/blacksmith. He continued his service after the war in India on the North West Frontier in Afghanistan in 1919.The picture of Herbert in his army uniform with his family is a composite picture. Whilst serving in the army he was also awarded the medal shown which was probably for a horse-shoeing contest.
